Boxscore: Islanders 4 Thunder 2
The Charlottetown Mark's Work Wearhouse Islanders have won the PEI Major Midget AAA Championship for the 5th time in the past 6 years.
The Islanders defeated the Cornwall Superior Thunder 4 - 2 on Saturday at the APM Centre sweeping the best of 7 series in 4 games.
The teams battled through a scoreless and cautious first period with the Thunder outshooting the Islanders 10 - 3. The second period was a much different story as the Islanders picked up the intensity with Craig MacLauchlan opening the scoring at 5:43 on a defensive turnover by the Thunder assisted by Max MacDonald.. J. C. Dawson made it 2 - 0 on the powerplay at 17:06 assisted by Cody Coffin and Jeremy Balderston. The Islanders outshot the Thunder 20 - 5 in the second period.
The third period was a battle as the Thunder attempted to stave off elimination. Devan Gunn cut the Islanders lead in half at 7:56 assisted by Jonathan Richards and Brandon Carter. Islanders forward Craig Dougan, the game 2 hero in overtime, raced from the players bench following an Islander's penalty picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone and blasting a shot past Thunder keeper Dylan McQuaid at 11:37 with would eventually be the game winner. The Thunder were not ready to give up as Josh Bowman redirected a pass from Stefan LaPierre past goalie Stephen Miller at 17:01 to cut the lead to 3 - 2. The Islanders continued to defend until team Captain Carson Trainor blocked a point shot and Craig MacLauchlan cleared the puck from the zone with Islander's forward Jordan McInnis racing down ice diving to reach the puck and prevent the icing call and J.C. Dawson sealing the victory with his second goal of the game into an empty net at 19:53. Goalie Stephen Miller got the win and the playoff MVP Award stopping 29 of 31 shots while Dylan McQuaid was tagged with the loss stopping 25 of the 29 shots directed his way.
